Yesterday there was a ton of discussion via Twitter and on several blogs regarding a comment reset “exploit” which surfaced for the WordPress 2.8.x branch.  To avoid recapping the exploit, if you want to learn more about this exploit, check out this great post from our friend Leland of Theme Lab.  Along with this exploit came the speculation that WordPress 2.8.4 was soon to follow with a fix.

Well, it turns out these people were correct, as this morning I found a friendly message in my dashboard telling me that WordPress 2.8.4 was ready for me to upgrade!  This was especially good news for me, as for some reason people believe that because I run a WordPress fan blog, that they should try it out on this website.  :(

Don’t feel bad, I have my password changed as well which ignited a fury to figure out what the issue was and how to fix it. Glad this event is over with!

Wow, that sucks. Yeah, I had the benefit I guess of knowing of the exploit before it first happened.

It is unfortunate, though, that people feel the need to try these exploits on WordPress niche blogs first. :(

Although i havent faced this particular problem however, it really is becoming difficult to keep with wordpress upgrades. They are releasing new updates after every fortnight.

  3. I am always hesitant to upgrade my WordPress because of some of my important plugins dieing or having problems. I also agree with Paritosh, WordPress seems to update a bit to often for my tastes.

I’ve been using wordpress since I believe version 2.5, and I’ve updated every time and new update has come out, and I love updating =D I’ve been really been surprised though with the 2.8 version and just how many quick updates we’ve been receiving due to security. I think it’s a good thing that they are on top of it, and working so hard for us! Hopefully all security issues have been resolved for 2.8.4 but then again as I learned in my computer course… no system is ever secure :(

    Till then,

    Jean

Is anyone else having difficulty with the automatic 2.8.4 upgrade. I click the button, then it just says “Downloading update from http://wordpress.org/wordpress-2.8.4.zip.” and doesn’t do anything. I have never had any trouble with upgrading in the past. Any of you smart kids out there know what is going wrong? Thanks

    Chris
