Now that WordPress 2.6 is in the books and everything seems to be working really great, I think it is time to turn our attention towards WordPress 2.7 and what features are being considered for this release.
I’ve always said that some of the improvements I would most like to see are simply to have more of the “must have” plugins built into the core WordPress installation, like they did when they added tags in WordPress 2.3. I know the plugins are available, but having these plugins built into the WordPress software would help make things run smoother and minimize the resources used.
According to the WordPress Codex for WordPress 2.7, here are some things being considered:
- Comments API
- Keyboard shortcuts for comment moderation
- Remove old/unused code
- Theme update api, like we do for plugins
- Some default shortcodes, maybe the most popular 10 from WordPress.com
- Dashboard and write box rearranging
- One-click plugin installs
- oEmbed support, tied in with shortcodes
- Admin-only reply thing, for admin replies to comments (7435)
- Better UI for post revisions, maybe an optional field to say what changed in a version
- Core updating
- oAuth support
- A frame-like method for moderating ping/trackbacks
- GeoData for posts, comments, attachments, etc.
- Duplicate post Tags UI for other taxonomies (6387)
- SWFUploader make it work with Flash 10
- Template tags to do everything the custom gallery on ma.tt does
- Plugin browser embedded
- Codepress code highlighting for template editing
- Php xref hosted on WordPress.org
- Tag intersections, all posts that have tag x AND y (We already do this)
- Menu editor
- Separate Large and Full image sizes, related improvements (7151)
- Unbalanced tags across more and nextpage tags
- Sitemaps by default
- Comment threading
- Batch editing of posts
- Refresh of the importers
- Subscribe To Comments plugin in core?
- MPTT for hierarchies
- Gallery post_type
- Versioning of template edits
- Documentation links for functions used in currently edited template
As I mentioned above, these are proposed features for this release, not necessarily a list of features that will be included. With that said, I am pretty excited for some of the possibilities (which I bolded above).
Update: It looks like Weblog Tools Collection has published a similar post, but their post appears to have more confirmed features for WordPress 2.7, so I recommend you check it out if you haven’t seen it already.
These kind of posts generally make for a good discussion. What features would you most like to see in WordPress 2.7?

nice list. thanks for sharing.
WordPress 2.6 is working really Great? Perhaps a little more research needs to be done … but then again I guess in the realm of open source the amount of bugs is considered a Great Success.
Its not you, its me! Grrrrrr
Good news! Do you know the scheduled release date?
What exactly do they mean by “Auth support?” I’m asking b/c I am hoping that it means they’ll allow for connecting to existing user directories like LDAP. If that isn’t what they mean, then I’ll say that is what I most want to see added.
If it is really,i think i can deactivate some plugins.
Sitemaps by default , wow finally.. WP should be more SEO by default this days..
