Long ago, back when WordPress 2.0 was released, the concept of author/user roles was introduced to the WordPress community. The problem I’ve always had is that these roles are pre-defined, meaning I can’t let a contributor upload photos, etc.
If you run a multi-author weblog, you may be interested in a WordPress plugin called the Role Manager plugin. With this plugin, you can control what each role can and cannot do!

Very interesting for multi-author blogs! I’ll have a look to this plugin.
I use this plugin and it’s been very helpful. The issue I was having is giving authors permission to be able to add html links. Being a pop culture blog, we use links in virtually every post we do to link to the news sources we use. Without this plugin, you have to give a post writer Editor status, which allows editing and deleting of all posts, before the person has permission to add a hotlink to a post.
With this plugin, I was able to create an author level that would allow a poster to write a complete post, with links, and then submit for approval without actually posting. That way I could add new posters to the staff who could post all that they needed to post without risking the security of other bloggers.
Good find, Kyle. I recently hired a part time writer on my vegetarian blog.
However my writer is under contributor status, and as such doesn’t have authority to post IMAGES. Now he will. Good stuff.
Another plugin i am looking for is one to create an author or bio page.
Do you know of a good (and recent) one?
Thanxs again! (off to download it now)
Missy.
I’ve had to promote people to author to get round the restrictions of contributor so thanks for this! Seems to be working fine!
nice plugin…
