I’ve never been a big fan of mailto links, as having your email address in your website’s code can cause it to get picked up and used for spamming purposes.  In their place I’ve always used a WordPress contact form.

With that said, a mailto link does have its place and Joost De Valk over at Yoast.com recently published a great post explaining how to create a mailto link.  In his post, you’ll find the code you need, a list of variables, and a bunch of examples you can reference.
