In addition to getting used to the new look and feel of the WordPress dashboard in WordPress 2.5, the second major adjustment you’ll probably have to make is getting used to the WordPress write panel (for those that write their posts within the dashboard).
I’ve probably written over 100 posts since upgrading to WordPress 2.5 across my blogs and I can honestly say I’m still not used to it. I usually adapt very quickly to change, but I’ve already noticed that I often forget to assign the category to my posts because the category panel is out of sight. I end up having to edit the post after being published to correct these types of things. I also do not like the way recommended tags now work in this addition, and I want to be able to save and continue editing.
Other than that, this edition is a huge improvement over the old write panel and makes software like Windows Live Writer less attractive. How do you like the new WordPress write panel?
Also, if you haven’t made the switch yet, you may want to check out this post written by a guest blogger over at Michael Martine’s blog named Knowing Your Way Around the WordPress Write Panel. This post was designed to introduce you to everything the new WordPress write panel has to offer, and compares it to where everything was in WordPress 2.3.3 and earlier.

I do find myself using the new Write Panel more than I used to… but I’m still an avid WLW user. I just love it centralizing all my blogs in one place plus a fairly decent WYSIWYG.
I haven’t forgotten – yet – to add the categories, but I do find myself looking for it still. Adding tags I like way better than the old way. I sometimes forgot whether I used plural or singular, Capitals or not.. this is a lot easier for me.

not really a fan yet but I will get used to it.
hate having the comments below and hate the tag system.
the uploading of images seems a lot more of a pain as well.
Don’t even get me started on the widgets.

I think the new admin interface has a lot of usability issues, which make the regular interface almost impossible to use effectivly.
Too many functions beneath the scroll (even with large resolutions) which had been formerly positioned to the right.
I too always forget to assign a category now, ending up with having almost everything in the basic category.
Extra click for scheduling a date to my post, and Wordpress can’t memorize that I do use this function more than frequently.
Why is autocomplete in edit-page-form.php and edit-form-advanced.php disabled?
I can’t see scheduled time on first sight if I manage my posts, only date. I have to hover with my cursor over date, to see the time.
I switched almost immediatley to the Fluency Admin Plugin, which helps to work at least a little effective with Wordpress 2.5.
Don’t get me wrong. I do like Wordpress 2.5 a lot, I appreciate the work and I realized there are a lot of cool new features.
Nevertheless from a usability standpoint this new version is a step back. I heard that a lot of these aspects had been discussed before the release, but were simply ignored (didn’t verify that).

I’m still not keen on it. Like you I miss the category area, and the import image delay is annoying. One thing I do like though is the ability to switch to full screen, so much easier to write.

I find it significant better than the old way of doing things.
I will admit that I have written posts and forgotten to set the category; however, in scrolling down to set the category it reminds of other things that I should be setting, or considering, and so all in all I find it quite helpful.

I agree that it would be much easier if the categories were up next to the write box like before – I also don’t like having to scroll down, and even at that the box that contains the categories is too small and I have to scroll within that box as well. I’m hoping someone will write a plugin to allow one to move the components around to suit the user’s needs (and really, why isn’t this just a built-in feature?)…..
In the meantime, for any Mac users out there, I can highly recommend MarsEdit as a nice tool for writing/publishing blog posts…..it displays the categories to the right like the old version of WP did.

Looks like everyone has mixed feelings about it!
I think we can all agree, though, that they are headed in the right direction. Hopefully they will move the categories off to the right in a future release. That is my main complaint!

@ John – Thanks. I’ll have to look into that a little further. If I remember correctly, clicking Save takes you to a blank page (to write a new post) and you have to click Edit post or something similar to make the edits.

I do not like the new write panel, I hate the fact that all of the post options are below the text box instead of the right side. I also am having problems with writting posts to have them appear later, if I change the time stamp on the post it doesn’t want to go up when it is supposed to and instead publishes when I hit “publish” even though the time stamp has been changed to a later time.
This upgrade to 2.5 has been a bit clunky in my opinion and I think they changed a lot of things that shouldn’t have been changed.

I’ve been quite vocal about my dislike of some of the changes in 2.5, but it was kinda pointless. Zeldman ignored me and the thread discussing it on the WP support forums was an excuse in futility (in terms of being herad by Wordpress devs) — but it proved to be very useful in other ways as several other people contributed hacks to making the Write screen act more like the old version.
