One of the things that separates WordPress from other blogging software out there is the fact that it is open source, and the benefits that go along with being open source. If you aren’t very good at coding, or good with PHP in particular, then the WordPress community has come to the rescue with WordPress plugins, which will allow just about anyone to easily add additional functionality to their blog. With the free WordPress plugins that various authors write and contribute from around the globe, WordPress has gained a lot of flexibility, causing it to be more attractive to potential bloggers.

As this site is dedicated to WordPress, I thought it would be a good idea to have a featured post dedicated to the best WordPress plugins available. This post is a constant work in progress, and will continue to be updated as I feature more plugins on this website. After each plugin, you should find a quick description, as well as a link to the full review. I have also broken the plugins down into categories for easy reference.

You forgot one that I use on my site: TreeMagic Cypress by AmbientWebs. Basically it allows you to double-click any word on your site and get a drop-down list. From the list, you can select the definition for the word, search it on Google, or any other query that you can possibly think of.

    Hi,

I just write a new plugin WP Widget Cache, which can cache the output of your blog widgets. You can treat it as a plus to WP Super cache, especially when Google is crawling your site. As your site has a lot of widgets, so I think it will significantly reduce the server usage.

Will you please have a try, and add it to this list. Thanks very much.

    Here’s the plugin url:

How about better search plugins? The basic WordPress search sucks, and needs improvement a lot. There are plenty of options, but of course I think mine is the best =) Relevanssi features:

    - improved matching, best hits first
    - custom post excerpts that show the part of the document where the hit was made
    - highlighting of search terms in results
    - you can index posts, pages or both
    - it’s possible to add custom fields to the index
    - search can be limited to a certain categories or tags
    - categories and tags can be excluded from search
    - phrase searching

The plugin is very much alive and kicking, and under constant development.

    Hi,

Nice list and I definitely agree with a lot of your recommendations. I’d like to suggest mine for inclusion though!

I’ve written a plugin for WordPress that allows you to mobilize your WP blog by installing the plugin! It dynamically resizes all images to fit the handset perfectly, you can keep the same URLs from mobile to web and also style your mobile site so that it matches the look and feel of your website. You will have lost none of your brand identity that you might with other mobile plugins.

In addition, it works for every single handset in the world – even those that haven’t even left the labs!

It’s called the Wapple Architect Mobile Plugin for WordPress and the homepage can be found here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wapple-architect/ – it’d be great to hear what you thought of it!

  69. lee says:

    Hi..

Not wanting to spam your blog..

but we have recently developed two plug ins for wordpress.
This one displays real time streaming quotes for markets, commodities and forex.. you can choose which markets to display and colors etc

    http://www.livecharts.co.uk/wordpressstockmarket.php

And this one allows you to display our news headlines from one of our sections..

    http://www.livecharts.co.uk/wordpressstockmarketnews.php

Because of the data charges and bandwidth we do ask for links to stay intact, but they are not too obtrusive!.. because of this we are not able to add it into wordpress official download area, but if we get enough people using them we may develop a version with this on.

    Hope this is of interest.

  70. HANS says:

    Great plugins list
    Thanks for share

  71. Lina Tani says:

Great post, I really liked the rss footer

  72. Rebecca Gill says:

Awesome list! The reason I love WordPress as much as I do is the community that exists. As a website designer, you have to love the plugin developers. I don’t know how I could live without WP-DB Manager and All-in-One SEO. All-in-One SEO makes my life easy, while WP-DB Manager keeps me from breaking clients’ websites.

Now if we could just find a really robust and SEO friendly for automatic links, my world would be perfect…

  73. Great list, but i would add Fotobook and Facebook Photo Fetcher Plugins which are great for sharing your photos on your wordpress enabled website…

  74. Geoff says:

Just when I thought I’d seen all the plugins I would possibly need I return and hey presto even more for me to check out. The premium advertising ons could be of some use.

  75. Kuldeep says:

Wow.. some really great plugins.. Think I need to have a look at all of them to figure out something which is itching me for a long time now.

  76. Peter says:

We’re considering converting to WP and looking at the number of super plugins, I doubt we have a choice.

I guess anyone can use it?

  77. Turbo says:

Wow, I find all these plugins a little mind boggling. I will have to go through the list again. At the moment I use Askinet and all in one SEO and find them very helpful. I can also recommend Word press database backup as it works perfectly.

  78. nisa sanjaya says:

yeah. that’s all .. best plugin.. thanks :D

Also I enjoy Greg’s SEO Plugin far more than All-in-one-SEO

  85. Ruth Martin says:

Hi, thanks for all the plugins. I installed the ‘Permalink Redirect’ immediately. Will be checking out more. I am searching for a plugin that removes broken links in my Word Press site. I am currently using the ‘Broken Links Remover’. It worked great at first, but now it is acting up. I am no longer able to delete the bad links. I wonder if maybe it’s not compatible with the newest version of Word Press that I installed recently. if it isn’t, and I can’t fix it, I would like to replace it with something else.

It messed it!, i need Buttons on my sidebar: http://yebuzz.com (THESIS THEME)

  87. Angel Lee says:

After looking through your list (fantastic list by the way), I just want to add one more to the list – EzAffiliateCash Ads Plugin for WordPress. I believe it used to be a paid plugin but the owner has made it free recently; it’s an all-in-one advertisement plugin that allows you to test different popular advertising methods on wordpress powered websites. I personally have tested it on my blogs (WP 3.x) and it works great. If you want to find out more about it you can visit http://www.adsplugin.com

I don’t think you can find it on the official wordpress.org/extend/plugins list but it’s indeed a gem!

    Just my 2 cents!
